In Canada, the Savages switched from 4 to 5 speed in about 1992, so I suspect both bikes have a five speed tranny.
The gear ratio of the 5th gear is almost the same as the 4th gear of the older 4 speed Savage. At speeds of 60 mph (100 KPH) there is little difference (about 5500 RPM vs. 5300 RPM).
I find the five gear is sometimes hard to engage, and I've read the same comment from other folks.
If it were my decision, I would buy whichever one of the two is in the best condition (and fit my budget).
